This is not necessarily an unfamiliar territory for either club, as both have already lifted the award. Nevertheless, none of them did so following Uefa ‘s decision to rebrand the Uefa Cup in 2009.
Shakhtar, interestingly, were the last ‘Uefa Cup’ winning team when they edged out Werder Bremen 11 years ago under legendary boss Mircea Lucescu.
As for their Italian opponents, they had a love affair with the prize during the 90s winning all three of their titles in a seven-year span (1991, 1994 and 1998), the last of which came at the Parc des Princes when Ronaldo and company bedazzled Serie A rivals Lazio.

Players to watch:
Inter Milan: The Nerazzurri’s chase to end a 10-year wait for European silverware has been the performance of Romelu Lukaku, who can’t stop finishing off chances in the Europa League. To date, the Belgian marksman has scored in each of Inter’s four games, with his most recent strike against Bayer Leverkusen meaning he’s now netted in nine consecutive outings (totalling 12 goals). The run stretches back to his Everton days and is a competition record.
Shakhtar Donetsk: It feels like Taison has been with Shakhtar Donetsk for a very long time, with this season being his eighth at the Ukrainian powerhouse. And it has already proven to be his most prolific to date.
Ahead of the showdown with Inter, the 32-year-old Brazilian forward has bagged 11 goals across 37 appearances, the most he’s produced in a single campaign. Of those strikes just one has come in the Europa League, but that took place last time out in their 4-1 rout of FC Basel, a game which he created another goal.
Scoreline prediction: Inter Milan 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk
